http://deltaboystheater.weebly.com/ For the past month, I’ve been dropping into rehearsals for IPHIGENIA CRASH LAND FALLS ON THE NEON SHELL THAT WAS ONCE HER HEART (a rave fable) by Caridad Svich. It has been So. Much. Fun. The talented group behind it, under the production name “The Delta Boys Theater Company,” is made up of Emily Anderson, Rajeev Rajendran, and Caitlin Wells. The cast and crew is made up of the most talented, sexy, frightening, weird, risk-taking, and fearless actors young actors and artists I know in the triangle (check out the website above for details on who!). The show takes place at the Nightlight Bar and Club in Chapel Hill, the perfect setting for a show described as “Sacrificial women haunt the darkling world created by Caridad Svich in her bold play. It creates a transfixing vision of hell on earth, buttressed by Svich’s fractured poetic voice and her unblinking laser gaze at the ethical costs of cheap labor and disposable celebrity” (Kerry Reid, The Chicago Tribune). My role has been as a movement designer and choreographer. The mood is seriously dark - sexy, frightening, and weird are keywords for this show - and I’ve had a blast helping to develop the seedy, reptilian-brain world that these characters live inside of. The movement ranges from Bowie-like bravado to manic-bird in a birdcage, from body-as-holy to body-as-doomed. The cast and crew are so down for exploration, which makes my job easy. Mostly I just come up with an idea for movement and let them carry out their interpretation of whatever that is, and because they are talented and curious, my job is easy. Also, the subject matter is really important. It’s about the killing of women, en masse, in Mexico (known as femicide). Part of the mission of the show is to spread visibility and deepen knowledge about this urgent and tragic situation. Check out this website for more details on that side of the show: http://deltaboystheater.weebly.com/thoughts.html I won’t be able to be at the performance every night, but I will be there when I can be. Please be in touch if you’d like to go on a night I will be there!
